Defining Artificial Grass Cost?

With so many different artificial grass turfs on the market these days, it can be difficult to understand what should artificial grass cost and what defines quality against cost.

Artificial Grass Cost

How much should artificial grass cost?

A question we get asked all the time is:- I have 40 square meters how much will it cost?

Well it is a simple question but very hard to give a definitive price. There is no other way in explaining but it really depends on what you justify spending. A £10 per square meter artificial grass would cost £400 delivered but there are many other factors to be considered. Removal of old grass, getting rid of the waste (skips aren’t cheap anymore), tanalised timber frame, hardcore, sharp sand, weed membrane and lastly your grass. So as you can imagine it’s not just straight forward!

A great way of saving money on artificial grass is ensuring you understand how to measure your area correctly. As most grasses are available in only 2m or 4m widths, we need to ensure minimal waste for your garden. Just to explain, if you have a garden that measures 6.50m x 6.50m? Your right in thinking that 6.5m x 6.5m = 42.25 square meters. But, to cover this area in a nice new fake grass you will need 4m x 6.50m x 2 cuts. So infact you need 4m x 6.50m x 2 = 52 square meters! Thats a difference of just under 10 square meters and if your grass was costing £20 per m2 then thats a whopping £200 in waste!

So, the best way before you start your project is to ensure that you can work either 4m & 2m widths into your calculations. Obviously sometimes you can’t but the area above would be best making smaller to something like 5.90m x 6.50m with maybe a small border of stones or something similar.

Now you have calculated your area correctly and designed your garden, you need to understand the difference in qualities. There are a few factors that you need to look out for but the main 3 are yarn shape, pile height and pile density (GSM – grams per square meter).

Yarn shape plays a key role in the feel and durability of all artificial grasses. If you want a soft feel then an oval or flat yarn is the best but generally this has its drawbacks as this can lay a lot flatter in cold and wet weather. It will stand back up when the sun comes out though and doesn’t reflect in the quality of the grass. In our opinion the best yarn for durability and all year round good looks is the C shape yarn. The yarn stems are slightly curved like a C, giving it more spine and rigidity. Although to the touch they seem a little more harsher, once the sun is on it they all go super soft anyhow. It looks better in appearance when the rain and cold kicks in and lets face it we have enough of this weather!

Pile height and pile density should be considered at the same time. Most people think the length of the pile dictates the quality of the artificial grass but when considering density (gsm) with this, it will give you the tightness of the pile. The higher the GSM value the more compact the grass will be. If stitch rate is shown also this will inform you how many stitches per square inch. The higher the value the more fuller the pile is. Most decent fake grass have a stitch rate around 13-17.

So considering all factors that are involved, I hope you have a good understanding of what needs to be considered when working out how much artificial grass cost.
